Straw Bale Greenhouse in progress. This is just one of several greenhouses I am working on with square hay bales, straw, and actually hemp bales.
This one is south facing and the square bales are blocking the strong winds from the North and West. You will see several recycled windows leaning in the back where I am experimenting with some early plantings. Also, note that we have some temporary cattle panels bent into place that I will cover with greenhouse plastic. My main concern is the strong winds we get on our permaculture property, there are very few trees and wide open fields next to us.

Watering the old fashioned way on our new Permaculture property. It's been a dry year so far, thankfully we have a natural creek going right through our land. This is my son and I walking down to get some water for our volunteer trees.

Alberta Hay Prices in 2020

Most of these hay prices were sourced from TownPost Alberta.

Old Wood stove and some natural rocks converted into a very functional fire pit. This old stove sits about 8" off the ground so it is hollow underneath, so much of the heat is lost to wind and out the bottom/back of the stove. So I simply collected large rocks and boulders from around our farm and stacked them around the base of the stove as well as some small rocks and gravel underneath to allow proper drainage and additional thermal mass to hold heat and release it slowly.

I may continue to add more rocks but already this setup produces a tonn of consistent heat even in the open air.
