Question: How much starter feed do I need for the life of a baby chick?

Short Answer: Between 2 and 3 pounds for the life of the chick if you keep them on starter feed for 8 weeks.

The amount of starter feed a baby chick will need throughout its life will vary based on several factors, including the breed of the chicken, the rate of growth, and the environment in which it is raised.

Typically, baby chicks will require starter feed for the first 6-8 weeks of their life. During this time, they should be provided with an unlimited amount of starter feed to ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development.

A good rule of thumb is to provide each chick with about 1/4 to 1/3 pounds of starter feed per week, depending on their size and appetite. This means that if you have 10 chicks, you would need around 2.5 to 3.3 pounds of starter feed per week.

It's important to monitor your chicks' feeding habits and adjust the amount of feed accordingly to ensure they are receiving the proper amount of nutrition. As they grow, you may need to switch to a different type of feed formulated for their age and needs.

If you're chicken starter feed comes in a 20kg bag you could raise between 14 and 22 baby chicks with this amount of feed for about 7-8 weeks.  Or if you buy a 25kg bag it would feed 18 to 27 baby chicks in their lifetime.

This is one of the Chicken Coops I am thinking of building this spring. I may block wind from the North and West by either adding walls on 2 sides or using some straw bales to insulate and block the wind.
